However, tufted rugs or bound carpets cannot be subjected to the same wash process because the backing that is glued onto the back of the rug can delaminate.  Basically, this means the backing can fall off or become separated if the rug is subjected to the same regular wash process.

Depending on the rug construction and the severity of the odor, odor is removed by:

• Pre-soaking in a deodorizing solution that will break down urine salts
• Soaking in a wash tub with sanitizer
